How an ERV Works

The mechanism is simple and the detail that matters in Florida is the moisture transfer. Without it you have an expensive way of importing humidity.

Balanced Exchange

Stale air out and fresh air in at matched rates, so building pressure stays neutral. This is what stops humid outdoor air being drawn in through gaps around doors and windows.

Heat and Moisture Transfer

The two streams pass through a core that moves heat and moisture between them without mixing the air. Incoming air arrives closer to indoor conditions than it started.

Why Not an HRV

A heat recovery ventilator transfers heat but not moisture, which suits cold dry climates. Here, the moisture transfer is the more valuable half, which is why ERV is the right specification.

Sizing to the Building

Ventilation rate is set by building volume and occupancy. Undersized achieves nothing noticeable, oversized pushes more outdoor air through than the core can usefully condition.

Duct Integration
