Setting the thermostat lower to stop the house feeling clammy is the most expensive way to solve the wrong problem. A whole-home dehumidifier removes moisture independently of cooling, so 76 degrees starts feeling comfortable again.

Whole-Home Dehumidification
An air conditioner removes moisture as a side effect of cooling. That is the important word: side effect. It dehumidifies while it is running, and it runs when the thermostat calls for cooling, which means moisture removal is tied to how hot the house is rather than how damp it is.
In Southwest Florida those two come apart constantly. On a mild, wet day the house does not need much cooling, so the system barely runs, so it barely dehumidifies, and the air gets heavy. A modern efficient system makes this worse rather than better, because it satisfies the thermostat faster and therefore runs for less time.
The usual response is to drop the thermostat two degrees, which forces longer runtime and does reduce humidity, at the cost of a cold house and a large bill. A whole-home dehumidifier decouples the two: it removes moisture on its own schedule, so you can hold a sensible temperature and still be comfortable. Always Air installs them across Charlotte, Sarasota, Lee, Collier and DeSoto counties.
Always Air installs whole-home dehumidifiers in Port Charlotte and across Southwest Florida. We are a licensed Florida HVAC contractor, License #CAC1824718, based at 1158 Market Cir #7, Port Charlotte, FL 33953. The unit integrates with the HVAC system and removes moisture independently of cooling, so indoor humidity can be held in a comfortable band without lowering the thermostat. Installation includes moisture load sizing, duct and electrical integration, condensate drainage, humidistat setup and airflow verification. Call (941) 467-4243.
Know What You Are Looking At
Most of these get blamed on the air conditioner being too small or too old. Measure indoor humidity first, because if it is high, none of them are really cooling problems.
A humidity reading takes minutes and settles the question. If the number is fine, we will look elsewhere rather than sell you a dehumidifier.

Moisture Removal on Its Own Schedule
The unit is ducted into the system and controlled by a humidistat rather than the thermostat. That separation is the entire benefit.
It runs when humidity is high, whether or not the house needs cooling. That covers precisely the mild, wet days when your air conditioner is doing least.
Capacity is matched to the property's actual moisture load rather than picked off a shelf. Undersized will not hold the target; oversized short cycles and costs more than it needed to.
Set a target humidity and the unit maintains it. You get a number to control, rather than inferring moisture from how cold you have made the house.
The water it removes has to go somewhere reliable. Poor drainage is the most common cause of trouble later, so it is planned properly at install.
Ducted into the system without stealing airflow from the cooling side. We check static pressure afterward, the same as any other addition to the air path.
If your air conditioner is oversized, that is contributing to the humidity. Worth knowing, because it changes what you should buy at replacement.
How We Work
Five steps, beginning with a measurement rather than an assumption.
Actual readings in the affected spaces. If humidity is already in a sensible band, the complaint is something else and we say so.
Property size, occupancy, ventilation, and whether an oversized system or duct leakage is contributing to what we measured.
Capacity matched to the load, with duct integration, electrical and drainage included in the written price rather than discovered later.
Ducted into the system, condensate routed to a reliable drain, electrical connected safely, humidistat sited where it reads the house rather than the unit.
Target humidity set, operation confirmed, and static pressure checked so the addition has not cost the cooling side any airflow.
Cheapest Moment to Do It
Fit the dehumidifier during the changeout and the ductwork and electrical are already open. More importantly, it is the moment to get the air conditioner sized correctly, because an oversized replacement will make the humidity problem worse and you will be solving it twice.
The Honest Version
Three of these are what customers try first. The comparison is not meant to dismiss them, but the running costs and the results are genuinely different.
| Lower the thermostat | Portable units | Seal ducts, right-size AC | Whole-home dehumidifier | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Controls humidity directly | No. Indirect via runtime | In one room | Reduces the load | Yes, to a set target |
| Whole property | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| Running cost | Highest. Cooling you did not want | Moderate per unit | Reduces running cost | Modest, and offsets cooling |
| Upfront cost | None | Low | Low to moderate | Moderate |
| Ongoing effort | Living in a cold house | Emptying tanks | None once done | None. Set and forget |
| Worth doing when | Never as a permanent answer | One problem room only | Always. Do this first | Humidity stays high after the above |
Yes. We provide integrated humidity control solutions for residential and light commercial properties across Florida.
Yes. By lowering latent load and reducing excessive runtime, whole-home dehumidifiers can support overall HVAC efficiency and reduce compressor strain.
Air conditioners remove moisture as a byproduct of cooling. In Florida’s climate, short runtime cycles or oversized systems may not reduce indoor humidity sufficiently. A dedicated dehumidifier manages moisture independently of temperature.
Maintaining indoor humidity between 45 and 55 percent reduces the conditions that allow mold growth. While no system eliminates all microbial risk, controlled humidity significantly lowers moisture-related growth potential.
No. Dehumidifiers work alongside the AC system to reduce indoor humidity without overcooling. This improves comfort and can reduce excessive runtime.
Always Air Is Always There
If you are running the thermostat colder than you would like just to stop the house feeling clammy, you are paying for cooling to solve a moisture problem. We will measure it and tell you what would actually fix it.
